Cool Essentials for Hot Nights
There was a season early in my corporate career when sleep and I were not on good terms. Stress ran high, my mind refused to power down at night, and insomnia crept in like an uninvited coworker who wouldn’t leave. That struggle became the spark that changed everything.
Bit by bit, I learned how to restore my rest, and in the process, discovered the power of sleep (and dreams!). Reclaiming healthy sleep felt like rediscovering a part of myself, and it’s what led me to the work I now love most: helping others turn their nights into their own source of strength and restoration.
For years I enjoyed the rewards of that hard-earned peace, until recently when a new kind of sleep disruption came knocking. As my body entered perimenopause, the sleep tools that had served me so well felt inadequate. It was disorienting, like my body had new rules I wasn’t prepared for. Night sweats became my nightly nemesis.
I was keeping my bedroom as cool as my husband could tolerate, but it wasn’t enough. I would toss off the covers, then pull them back on later. Hot, cold, hot, cold. Repeat. Five times a night. The result? Fragmented sleep and plenty of chances for my mind to wander in that anxious 3 a.m. territory.
So what’s really happening here?
During the menopause transition, the most common cause of hot flashes and night sweats is a drop in estrogen, which confuses the hypothalamus (the brain’s internal thermostat) into thinking we’re overheating. This triggers the body’s natural cool-down process: blood vessels dilate and sweating starts. The result? You weren’t hot a second ago, but suddenly it feels like someone turned a steamer on inside you.

Among the most commonly reported symptom during the transition, research shows that up to 80% of women experience vasomotor symptoms like hot flashes and night sweats. In many cases, insomnia develops as a result. It’s no wonder I often hear from women, “My sleep was fine until menopause.”

For some, hormone replacement therapy can help, but it’s not a one-size-fits-all fix. Even when it works, it doesn’t always restore restful sleep. What consistently helps is learning how to manage nighttime behaviors and the sleep environment.
The good news? Relief is possible.
There are lots of products designed to bring relief during this phase of life. I started exploring them to find natural ways to beat the heat and reclaim my peaceful nights, and I’m back to sleeping soundly again… no more midnight blanket gymnastics.
Below are the essentials that make up my own night sweats survival kit. Each has been tested and loved by me, a sleep coach who has absolutely been there, sweating, tossing, and figuring it out. From simple cooling comforts to game-changing innovations, these are the finds that have made the biggest difference.

Purifying and Cooling Fan
A key part of your cooling essentials is a good quality fan. Moving air in the room offers a sense of cooling and relief, and Dyson’s Purifier Cool is my choice.
It’s got 10 airflow speeds and an extra-wide oscillation option. I usually prefer silence at night, yet this fan’s sound hasn’t bothered me one bit. Even at higher settings, it produces a smooth, pleasant white noise that’s calming.
What I really love is that it’s also a powerful air purifier. Clean air in the bedroom supports restorative sleep. Research links higher indoor pollutants and poor ventilation with lower sleep efficiency, shorter total sleep time, and a higher risk of sleep-disordered breathing.
For a standing fan, this one’s a breeze to move. The large opening makes for easy grabbing; I weave my arm through and carry it to another room. It keeps me cooler in the bedroom at night and also in the kitchen, while I am doing a different kind of “cooking.”
Silk Pillowcase
Bedding is foundational to sleep quality, and when hot flashes strike, breathable is a must. Silk is a great option.
The exceptional breathability of silk fabric is due to its natural protein fibers and unique fiber structure. It’s great at helping to regulate body temperature and wick away moisture.
I started sleeping on Blissy pillowcases before any nighttime hot spells began because they are wonderful for hair and skin. These cases are natural and hypoallergenic, handmade from 100% pure mulberry silk.
I didn’t actually notice just how cooling they were until I really needed it. Now I love them more than ever. These cooling silk cases are worthy of every penny in my eyes.
Color options are nearly endless, and while you’re shopping, add a matching sleep mask to your cart. My favorite sleep masks are also from the Blissy lineup.

Moisture-Wicking Nightwear
The right nightwear is the next must-have. If you get hot and sweaty at night, the last thing you want is to feel clammy or to be stumbling out of bed to change.
When shopping for cooling sleepwear, look for fabrics that wick moisture away from your skin rather than trap it. Natural fibers like cotton and bamboo offer breathability, while newer performance fabrics are engineered for temperature regulation.
Choose loose-fitting styles that allow air to circulate. The key is something soft against your skin that actively keeps you dry and comfortable, because waking up drenched shouldn’t be part of your nightly routine.
LUSOMÉ has an array of sleepwear that helps you stay dry all night. My favorite is the comfy Eva Sleepshirt. Its simple style is flattering, and the moisture-wicking material pulls sweat away from your body. Their fabric is called XIROTEX™, and it is wonderfully soft and easy to care for.
If a sleepshirt is not your style, check out their traditional pajama tops and bottoms or other nightie styles, all made from the same remarkable fabric.

Personal Cooling Device
When a hot flash strikes, having something nearby that helps you cool down quickly can make all the difference.
Personal cooling devices come in many forms, from small handheld fans with misting sprays to wraps or portable fans that rest around your neck. The goal is to have something that brings instant comfort and, just as importantly, a sense of confidence that you’re ready whenever the heat rolls in.
My personal favorite? The Embr Wave 2. This sleek wrist-worn device delivers gentle waves of cooling sensations directly to the pulse point on the inside of your wrist, helping your body find balance in moments of sudden heat. It’s subtle, stylish, and surprisingly effective.
With the press of a button, Embr Wave starts working. It offers more than 30 modes to choose from, with varying session lengths, cooling or warming intensities, and waveform speeds. You can get fast relief for a few minutes or run it continuously for up to nine hours.
The first night I tried the Night mode, which periodically pulses cooling sensations, I assumed it would wake me or make no difference. I was wrong. It kept me from waking hot all night long.
I love to wear this one during the day, especially when presenting workshops. Not knowing when a hot flash may start, it gives me a sense of control. It’s great having a product I can use anytime I need to cool down. I press a button, shift awareness to the cooling pulse, and voilà—I feel better.
A couple of notes: on rare occasions, it has delivered a brief hot sensation when I intended cooling. The app also seems to require staying near your phone, so I tend to rely on the two programmable buttons on the device instead. I set one for a five-minute fast cool and the other for ninety minutes of periodic cooling, which keeps me perfectly comfortable throughout a workshop.
Cooling Mattress Topper

My very favorite, truly game-changing item in my survival kit changes the environment right underneath me.
Okay, your bed won’t actually send out wisps of cool mist into the night, but the relief feels that good. It’s like your mattress finally learned how to breathe again. Since adding one to my setup, I haven’t had a single night of tossing off the covers. Hallelujah!
This one’s a bit more of a splurge, but if temperature swings are stealing your sleep, it may be the best investment you can make. If you know anyone who owns a high-quality cooling mattress topper, you’ve probably noticed they became a walking advertisement for it. I now understand why.
Several toppers exist, and I tested two that I highly recommend: Chilipad Dock Pro by sleepme and Sleep Number Dual Temp Layer. They’re very different from one another, each with their strengths.
These are not standard gel toppers that feel cool at first and then warm with your body heat. They’re more advanced and run water or air through the pad, depending on the model. They do need to be plugged in.
These toppers can cover one side of the bed, or you can set up both sides, each with its own control. I’m sticking with the single-side configuration since my husband doesn’t need the cooling… lucky him.
Chilipad Dock Pro Bed Cooling System
This was the first system I tested. I was excited to receive it, but a little intimidated by the setup. I’d never had anything on my bed that runs water through it. In retrospect, it was simpler than I imagined. The initial setup took about 30 minutes; now I could do it in 10.
It comes with an external reservoir you fill with distilled water. The unit slips right under my bed. A hose clicks into the unit and then into the pad. The hose is visible at the foot of the bed, which may bother some aesthetically. I didn’t mind if it meant comfortable sleep.
You do need to top off the reservoir periodically, as the water level declines. An icon on the unit lets you know when it is time. For me, that was in a little more than a week. When storing, you drain the unit. I found both tasks easy.
The pad is very thin and rests under your fitted sheet. No old-school waterbed vibes here. Think slim heating pad that also cools.
The pad lays flat with straps that slip under the mattress to keep it in place. My Sleep Number smart mattress made this trickier because of the air hose and connecting magnets. Note: if you choose the “WE” model, which covers both sides, the design fits over the mattress like a standard fitted sheet rather than using straps underneath.
Once powered on, water flows quickly at your chosen temperature. You can set any temperature from 55°F to 115°F. The app is robust, with guidance and the ability to program temperature changes through the night, such as warming near wake-up time.
I appreciate controlling the unit directly at the device without the app. There’s also an option to turn off Wi-Fi to limit EMFs, which I use.
I am highly sensitive to sound at night, and this unit is whisper quiet. So much so that when I’d go to turn it off at the base, I’d be questioning if it was even running. They did an amazing job with the sound control on this product.
The best part: a wonderfully comfortable night of sleep, all night long. If anything, I had to adjust it to be less cool than I first set it to. It’s that effective. I now love my Chilipad. If I could have only one item in my survival kit, this product would be it.

Sleep Number DualTemp® Layer
Because my mattress connects to the base, I wanted to try a topper that would not require disconnecting anything. Sleep Number’s DualTemp Layer is a completely different option, and I have come to love it as well.
Setup is simpler because there is no water running through the pad. This system circulates air. There’s still an external unit that plugs in and sits under or beside the bed. The hose runs along the side of the bed rather than the foot. You can add a second unit for the other side; they snap together with buttons at the center.
This pad secures with flap-style anchors under the head and foot of the mattress, so there’s no need to slide straps underneath. Having no water to manage made it feel less intimidating, and setup was very quick.
The unit is controlled by a handheld remote: on/off, three levels of cool, three levels of heat, and a timer.
I really like the comfort of the pad itself. The cushiness is perfect for me. It’s thick enough, however, that if you’re only cooling one side of the bed, you’ll see the height difference under the fitted sheet.
Instead of a specific temperature, you choose from three cooling levels that control airflow strength. I was unsure if it was doing much, at first. The air flow is quite subtle to the touch. But over the night, I appreciated the cooling effect. The gentle airflow rising from the pad is very soothing. I quickly found I didn’t need the high setting, as the lowest was enough to keep me comfortable.
Airflow is the primary cooling mechanism, with many small perforations in the pad. The DualTemp Layer is reliant on your room temperature, and if your room isn’t cool, the air cannot cool much beyond it. So, during those most hot Tucson months, this one isn’t going to save much on the air conditioning.
This unit is not whisper-quiet, and it makes noticeable noise at the highest setting. With two units, I suspect it would be too loud for my taste. If you like white noise, you may not mind. At the lowest level, which became my preference, the sound is fine. I would love this one all the more if the noise level were reduced.
That said, I genuinely appreciate both toppers. Since using either one, I’ve not had to toss off the covers at all. For that reason, both top my list of night sweats survival tools, and I would recommend either for hot sleepers.

Finding Your Own Relief
If you’re waking up in pools of sweat, kicking off covers, or lying awake at 3 a.m. wondering if this is your new normal, I want you to know it does not have to be.
Hot flashes and night sweats are real, disruptive, and exhausting. They’re also manageable when you have the right tools and a willingness to experiment with what works for your body. Reclaiming restful sleep is not about perfection. It is about personalization.
The products in my survival kit have genuinely given me my nights back. Beyond the gear, what made the biggest difference was remembering that I deserve to sleep well. My rest matters. Showing up for myself in the night is just as important as showing up for everyone else during the day.
What may seem like simple solutions can truly make a difference. A silk pillowcase, a fan, a cooling wearable, the right pajamas, and a mattress topper can all help you feel more comfortable. It’s also worth having a conversation with your doctor about hormone support to see if it’s right for you.
You are not alone in this. Your body is brilliant, even when it feels like it’s working against you. Sometimes it just needs the right invitation to settle back into rhythm.
Sweet dreams and cool, comfortable nights to you,
Leah
