What On Earth Are Grounding Sheets—And Can They Actually Help You Sleep Better?

Updated August 13, 2026: This review now includes Premium Grounding, along with longer-term observations.

If you’ve ever heard of grounding sheets for sleep and thought, “what on earth are those” you’re not alone.

That was my exact reaction the first time a workshop attendee told me they were using them and noticing real benefits. At first, I tucked it away as one of those interesting, possibly far-fetched trends, until I heard it again. And again. So, I got curious. I’m a sleep coach, after all, and curiosity about what helps (and what doesn’t) is practically a job requirement.

I decided to investigate grounding sheets for myself, both subjectively and scientifically. Could these bedsheets—woven with conductive silver threads—actually improve sleep quality?

I ran a multi-week home trial on three brands, tracked sleep data with our Sleep Number smart bed, and paid attention to how my husband and I felt while using them. This post is the result of that exploration.

But first: let’s back up. What exactly is grounding?

🌿 Grounding, Earthing & Getting Back to Nature

Earthing—or grounding—is the practice of connecting with the Earth’s surface by making direct contact with the skin. Think bare feet on the grass, lying on a beach, or even swimming in a lake. It’s based on the idea that the Earth has a natural, negative electric charge, and when we’re touching it, we can neutralize excess positive charge in our own bodies.

That might sound “out there,” but when you think about how deeply connected humans once were to the Earth, it starts to make sense. People weren’t walking around on rubber-soled shoes, sealed off from the Earth. They weren’t sleeping on thick, elevated mattresses surrounded by Wi-Fi signals. They were barefoot more often. They touched the ground. They slept closer to the soil. There was no need to try to “get grounded.” It just happened naturally.

These days, most of us are separated from the Earth 24/7—insulated by shoes, pavement, and multiple floors of concrete. Earthing is essentially a way to return to a natural baseline. You don’t need to believe in magic to believe in nature. It might just be that in our search for better sleep and health, we’ve overlooked one of the most natural connections of all—the one beneath our feet.

As I started exploring the idea of slipping a grounding sheet onto my bed, I became intrigued. I’m someone who finds deep wisdom in the natural world, and I often ask myself: How can we return to a rhythm that’s more aligned with our nature, before modern lifestyles pulled us away from it?

Could this product be a way to reconnect with the Earth, even from way up high on my bed? I decided to take a closer look.

🧠 And yes, there’s science behind it.

While the research is still emerging, and more large-scale studies are needed, early findings are promising:

A 2012 review in theJournal of Environmental and Public Health explored multiple studies showing measurable physiological changes from grounding, including reduced inflammation, improved sleep quality, and normalized cortisol levels (Chevalier et al., 2012). Researchers noted that direct physical contact with the Earth appears to influence the autonomic nervous system, reduce blood viscosity (which supports cardiovascular health), and enhance recovery from physical exertion or injury.

Other studies have reported notable shifts in markers like heart rate variability, immune response, and even wound healing. One particularly compelling study tracked grounded sleepers over several weeks and found not only reduced nighttime cortisol, but also better sleep patterns and decreased stress levels (Ghaly & Teplitz, 2004). For some, grounding seemed to help the body reestablish a natural rhythm, offering a subtle, steady support system through the night.

While the research is fascinating, it naturally leads to a more practical question:

🌱 How Do We Get Grounded?

Now that we’ve seen what the studies are showing, how do we put grounding into practice?

The most natural way to get grounded is to simply slip off your shoes and walk barefoot on the earth. But in our modern, mostly-shoes-on world, that’s easier said than done. Between packed schedules, urban living, unpredictable weather, or physical limitations, connecting with the ground outside isn’t always practical.

To support the effort to stay connected to the Earth even when life gets in the way, a growing number of products have entered the scene. A quick search will turn up plenty of options: throws, mats, patches, shoes, socks—all designed to bring the Earth’s energy to you.

When you’re walking in typical shoes or spending time indoors surrounded by electrical devices and wiring, your body can pick up ambient voltage—almost like you’re an antenna. Grounding products helps discharge that excess voltage, bringing your body’s electrical potential back to the Earth’s natural baseline.

Among the most popular products? Bedding. Which brings us full circle to those mysterious grounding sheets.

These sheets were developed to get the benefits of earthing while you sleep—when your body is already in deep repair mode. They’re typically made from cotton interwoven with conductive silver threads and connect via a cord to the ground port of a wall outlet (or a grounding rod placed outside in the earth). When properly connected, they deliver the neutralizing energy you’d get from a barefoot walk across a field.

🛏️ My Grounding Sheet Sleep Test

Here’s how I approached it: I began with a baseline week using our regular sheets, tracking sleep quality and quantity with our smart bed. Then, over the next three weeks, my husband and I rotated through different brands of grounding sheets—each tested for a full week under the same sleep setup and routine.

But beyond voltage drops and sleep scores, we wanted to know how they felt. Because even the most functional product gets a hard pass if it’s uncomfortable to sleep on. Wellness should feel good too.

☁️ Comfort, Texture & First Impressions

When it comes to sheets, comfort is everything. This is where the brands really differed:

  • GroundLuxe was our hands-down favorite among the fitted grounding sheets designed for direct skin contact. It felt smooth, had a slight coolness against the skin, which was a big win during Tucson summers, and fit snugly on the mattress. This sheet met my expectations for a quality fitted sheet and was easily the most comfortable and luxurious of the three conventional grounding sheets we tested.
  • Premium Grounding offers a completely different experience. This grounding sheet lies beneath your regular fitted sheet, so the bedding you already use is what you feel against your skin. I love that option, especially for anyone who does not want to sacrifice the feel of a favorite sheet. Because this product is not designed for direct skin contact, it can prioritize durability over softness. While many grounding sheets use thin, silver-coated threads that can deteriorate with repeated washing, Premium Grounding uses 316L surgical-grade stainless steel fibers. The company says this material will not tarnish or wash out and is designed to maintain its conductivity over years of use.
  • The Grounding Company’s Terra Sheet delivered nice comfort and a snug fit. It wasn’t quite as breathable or immediately soft as GroundLuxe, and after the first several washes, I noticed some puckering from the silver threads that affected the feel. With additional washing, however, the fabric softened noticeably and became more comfortable. Its feel has improved with continued use.
  • Hooga was the most affordable option and initially had a noticeably rougher texture. It did, however, function very well and fit snugly like the others. My husband wasn’t a fan of the texture at first, though I didn’t find it bothersome. With repeated washing, the sheet softened and became more comfortable. It remains a reasonable option for someone testing grounding on a budget or looking for a travel backup.

⚡ The Voltage Check

To confirm that the grounding sheets were actually doing their job, we used a simple voltage meter (my husband happens to have one for his work). This type of meter can measure how much ambient electrical charge your body is picking up from the surrounding environment. Think of it like testing how much your body is “soaking in” from nearby wiring, plugged-in lamps, and devices.

Before grounding, my body voltage typically measured between 1 and 3 volts, depending on where I was standing. But the moment I touched the grounded sheet, the number dropped to zero. It was amazing to watch the change happen in real time, showing that the sheet was creating a direct connection to the Earth’s energy. It allowed my body to release excess charge and return to a neutral baseline. (Curious what that looks like? Watch the voltage meter make its dramatic drop right here.)

From a functionality standpoint, each sheet we tested worked — they all delivered that grounding effect.

💡 Sleep Coach’s Tip:

Don’t have a voltage meter? You can find grounding meters online for around $20-30, and there are plenty of YouTube videos showing exactly how to test your sheets. It’s worth confirming they’re actually working!

🧵Conductive Fiber Content & Durability

The grounding connection comes from conductive fibers woven into each sheet. Three of these products use silver fiber, while Premium Grounding uses stainless steel. Because conductivity depends on those fibers remaining intact, the material, weave, laundering, and regular use can all influence how well a sheet holds up over time.

  • GroundLuxe contains 10% silver threading, with a visibly denser weave. It’s marketed as more durable and better able to withstand repeated washing.
  • Premium Grounding is made with a 30% stainless steel ConductiveCore™ weave. The company says the material resists oils, moisture, and breakdown.
  • Hooga uses 5% silver fiber, arranged in a clearly visible grid-like pattern.
  • The Grounding Company uses 6% silver fiber, with a more evenly dispersed weave.

All four products established a grounding connection during our testing. The conductive-fiber percentage offers one point of comparison, but it is not a durability score on its own, especially because the products use different conductive materials. If you’re thinking long-term, the type of fiber, how it is woven into the fabric, and how the sheet is used and laundered may matter as much as the percentage itself.

💡 Sleep Coach’s Tip:

Wash grounding sheets gently with mild detergent. Skip fabric softener and dryer sheets, and keep pet claws away—those delicate threads deserve a little TLC.

Note: GroundLuxe also offers eco-friendly detergent sheets and wool dryer balls as part of their product line.

💸 Little Extras That Made a Big Difference

GroundLuxe was the only brand that tucked a couple of bonus goodies into their box:

    • A dual-outlet safety adapter—ensures a proper connection and perfect to add a grounding pillowcase or expand your setup later on.
    • An outlet tester, which honestly deserves a standing ovation. I wouldn’t have known to use one if they hadn’t included it. (Let’s be real—no one should plug a grounding sheet into an untested outlet.) This small but mighty tool made me feel a lot more confident about the safety side of things.

🌍 What to Know Before You Plug In

I had an unexpected twist in my experience of sleeping grounded—one I wished I’d known to look out for. Let’s talk about dizziness, dirty electricity, high-EMF environments, and going “old school.”

We often say “the world is spinning” when life feels chaotic, but in my case, that phrase started to feel a little too real. After a couple of weeks of sleeping on grounding sheets every night, I began waking with a strange sense of dizziness. I was also experiencing a woozy, light-headed sensation that made me wonder if something deeper was being stirred in my system.

Though my outlet tested as properly grounded, I started to question whether I might be picking up what’s sometimes called “dirty electricity” or other electrical interference. This can travel through household wiring—or build up in rooms with a lot of Electromagnetic field (EMF) sources like Wi-Fi routers, clustered electronics, or power strips. While grounding can be beneficial, using it in a high-EMF space can complicate the experience.

So, I decided to go old school with an all-natural approach. I ran a wire out my bedroom window and connected it to a grounding rod staked directly into the soil outside. (These are easy to find, and GroundLuxe even offers a grounding stake on their website.) The wire is thin and sturdy enough that I was able to easily shut and lock the window without any issue. The voltage meter reading was the same—back to zero. This switch helped put my mind at ease, and perhaps not coincidentally, the dizziness went away.

While the dizziness improved, I wasn’t entirely in the clear yet. I noticed some other strange sensations: some tingling in my hands during the night and a faint buzzing sensation in my body. My husband didn’t experience any of this, but it didn’t surprise me. I’ve always been more sensitive to energetic shifts. My mom used to say our family members were like canaries in the coal mine. If someone was going to react to something subtle, it would be us.

That’s when I dug deeper into the less-talked-about aspect of grounding—its potential side effects. I had mostly come across glowing reports and bold claims, but not much about the adjustment period that sensitive individuals might go through. What I discovered made me feel far less alone.

In fact, these types of sensations aren’t all that uncommon. Some people experience what’s known as a “healing crisis” or Herxheimer reaction, a temporary flare-up of symptoms when the body begins releasing stored inflammation or toxins. The body starts to recalibrate. And with that shift, you may notice some strange sensations along the way. The grounding process, especially if you dive in headfirst, can act like a system reboot. For some people, it’s seamless. For others, like me, it’s more of a bumpy ride.

It’s also worth noting that indoor grounding products are best used in spaces with low EMF exposure. In high-EMF environments, grounding may actually connect you to unwanted electrical noise in the system. Testing your space—or choosing lower-EMF areas of the home—can help ensure a cleaner, more beneficial experience.

Not everyone goes through this—and some feel great right away. But if you’re sensitive, don’t be surprised if it takes a little time.

Some of the most commonly reported symptoms are:

      • Dizziness or lightheadedness
      • Fatigue or increased sleepiness
      • Tingling, buzzing, or pins-and-needles sensations
      • Temporary insomnia or restlessness
      • Headaches or a heavy-headed feeling
      • Mood swings or emotional release
      • Mild digestive upset

These are usually temporary, and some experts liken it to a “detox” effect. Often, they indicate that something is shifting in your body and that healing may be underway. But that doesn’t mean you need to push through full force.

My recommendation? Ease in. If you’re considering grounding sheets or any kind of earthing device—especially for overnight use—start slowly. Try shorter sessions during the day at first, maybe while reading or meditating, and gradually increase as your system adjusts.

Tips to Ease In:

✔ Test your outlet—or use a grounding rod for peace of mind

✔ Start with short sessions during the day (reading, napping, meditation)

✔ Ease into overnight use gradually

✔ Stay hydrated

✔ Most importantly, listen to your body.

Grounding, like any healing tool, it’s not one-size-fits-all. Give yourself time to adjust. The Earth isn’t in a hurry, and you don’t have to be either.

💤 Let’s Talk Results: Did It Improve Our Sleep?

I was already sleeping pretty well, so I didn’t expect major changes. My goals with grounding were more about general wellbeing, like reducing inflammation, rather than dramatic shifts in sleep quality.

That said, over the 3 weeks I slept grounded, I did feel a difference. I had fewer memories of waking during the night, and I felt more deeply asleep. My smart bed doesn’t track sleep stages, but it does give a general sleep score. During this time, my sleep score improved slightly—about 2%—mostly from a small increase in overall sleep time.

While my changes were subtle, my husband’s results were much more dramatic.

He’s typically the restless sleeper in our house. He tosses and turns, and sometimes deals with restless legs. During the grounding weeks, compared to his baseline, here’s what changed:

      • 💤 His sleep score improved by an average of 17.5%
      • ⏱ He gained an extra 42 minutes of restful sleep per night
      • 😴 His time to fall asleep dropped by 17 minutes per night

He also reported feeling noticeably more rested. He had fewer awakenings, less restlessness, and a deeper quality of sleep. Honestly, that’s a big shift—not just in the data, but in how he felt. Results like these convinced me the sheets are worth keeping.

🌿 So, Are Grounding Sheets Worth Trying?

If you’re curious about grounding and want a natural way to support your sleep, grounding sheets might be worth considering—especially if you struggle with restlessness or feel “wired but tired” at bedtime.

The truth is, there’s no single solution that works for everyone. Grounding isn’t a magic fix. But based on our experience—backed by both sleep data and how we felt—it made a difference. Just keep in mind, our test was a sample size of two.

From what I’ve read and experienced, give it at least 2–3 weeks to see if grounding works for you. Some benefits may show up sooner, but others take time to develop. Consistency is key.

🧵 Final Thoughts

Comfort, budget, durability, and personal preference all matter when choosing a grounding sheet. Based on my testing, two products stand out for different reasons.

GroundLuxe remains my top choice for a traditional fitted grounding sheet. It offers the best combination of comfort, fit, and effectiveness, and it is the brand I plan to stick with when adding fitted grounding sheets and accessories.

Premium Grounding is another top option for an entirely different reason. Because it lies beneath any regular fitted sheet, you can continue sleeping on the bedding you already know and love. Its stainless steel construction is also designed for greater long-term durability. If versatility and longevity are your priorities, Premium Grounding may be the better fit.

If you’re looking for a starter option, Hooga is a more affordable way to explore grounding. There are also plenty of other brands I haven’t tested, so feel free to explore your options.

No matter what brand you choose:

      • ✅ Test your outlets
      • 🧐 Check your space — grounding indoors may not be ideal if your room has high EMFs from devices or wiring
      • 🧼 Care for your sheets gently
      • 🩷 Wear natural sleepwear — synthetics can block grounding
      • 🌍 Remember that there’s more than one way to get grounded

I’d love to hear what your experience has been like. If you’ve tried grounding, add your comments below—or let me know what questions come up as you consider giving it a try.

As always, I’m here to help illuminate your path to sleep better and live brighter.

Sweetest dreams,

Leah
